Following its successful hosting of the ASEAN Travel Exchange, Lapu-Lapu City’s newest icon is set to welcome the region’s most distinguished leaders for the 48th ASEAN Leaders’ Summit this May.

History has a way of coming full circle. Exactly 505 years after Ferdinand Magellan first stepped onto Philippine shores, a new landmark has been unveiled in Lapu-Lapu City that aims to bring the world back to Cebu—this time, on our own terms.

On March 16, 2026, President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. officially inaugurated the Mactan Expo. This isn’t just another glass-and-steel box; it’s the architectural heartbeat of Megaworld’s 30-hectare Mactan Newtown township.

More Than Just a Meeting Space

The Mactan Expo is a masterclass in "Tropical Modernism." Eschewing the sterile aesthetic of traditional convention centers, this venue features surfaces embedded with local shells and indigenous textures that celebrate Cebuano craftsmanship. While it’s a pillarless giant capable of holding 3,000 people, it remains intimately connected to its surroundings via a veranda that opens directly toward the pristine Mactan Newtown Beach.

"The Mactan Expo serves as an important platform... a strong example of how the government and the private sector can work together—from start to finish—to deliver something meaningful and successful."

    — Kevin L. Tan, CEO of Alliance Global Group

    Why This Matters Now

This isn't just a "build it and they will come" project; the world is already arriving.

    • The Global Debut: Fresh off hosting the ASEAN Travel Exchange (TRAVEX), the Expo is already proving its operational mettle.

    • The Main Event: This May, it will serve as the official stage for the 48th ASEAN Leaders’ Summit, welcoming heads of state from across Southeast Asia.

    • The Cultural Anchor: Positioned adjacent to the upcoming Mactan World Museum, the Expo is the cornerstone of a plan to cement Cebu as the Philippines' premier "MICE" (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) destination.

At a Glance: The Mactan Expo

    FeatureDetail
    CapacityClose to 3,000 guests (Theatre-style)
VersatilityOne massive hall divisible into three smaller zones
DesignCollaborative work featuring Cebuano artists and natural finishes
ProximityLocated directly across from Mercure and Savoy Hotels

By blending a beachside atmosphere with high-stakes international diplomacy, Megaworld is doing more than opening a building—they are defining a legacy for the region.

MEGAWORLD TO BUILD P1.5-B CONVENTION CENTER NEAR THE BEACH IN MACTAN

The 2,500-seating capacity Mactan Expo Center will further boost Cebu's MICE tourism industry

    Megaworld Mactan Expo Center Cebu

CEBU CITY, Philippines, July 18, 2023 - Property giant Megaworld is building a two-level standalone convention center inside its 30-hectare The Mactan Newtown township in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu

Set to rise just across the newly opened Belmont Hotel Mactan along Newtown Boulevard, the P1.5-billion Mactan Expo Center will offer almost a hectare of MICE space (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions).

The ground level will feature a convention hall that can accommodate up to 2,500 people for theatre-type set-up, and 1,600 people for banquet-style set-up. The convention hall can also be divided into three smaller halls that can accommodate around 700 to 900 persons per hall for theatre-style, and 500 to 600 persons per hall for banquet-style layout.

The main convention hall will have its own expansive foyer and pre-function areas. The ground level will also have two drop-off areas, service kitchen area, cafes, and an event showroom, where expo center clients can check sample event set-ups and arrangements.

At the mezzanine level, the expo center will have two meeting rooms for smaller and intimate events. Each meeting room can accommodate up to 100 persons for banquet-style layout and around 150 persons for theatre-style layout. Both meeting rooms may be combined into a single venue.

The mezzanine level will also have its own pre-function area, as well as an outdoor balcony and storage rooms.

With its minimalist design that illuminates at night, the Mactan Expo Center's façade will be complemented by interiors inspired by Cebu's local culture, festivals, arts, flavors, nature scenes, and icons. Design elements will be mostly sourced locally.

"We hope to build another iconic landmark not just for Mactan but for the entire province of Cebu.

This convention center will be a unique standalone structure that will help boost the province's booming MICE industry," says Kevin L. Tan, chief strategy officer, Megaworld.

The Mactan Expo Center will have two passenger elevators, two escalators, and a service elevator. It will also have its own 100% back-up power, and will have WiFi access in most areas.

The convention halls and meeting rooms will be equipped with fixed video screens, as well as state-of-the-art audio and visual systems and video conferencing technology.

The Mactan Expo Center will be compliant to the requirements of the Philippine Green Building Council (PGBC) as it integrates several sustainability features into the structure, such as the use of low emissivity façade glass, low flow water fixtures, and having its own rainwater recycling facility as well as a sewage treatment plant and materials recovery facility.

Currently, the township where the Mactan Expo Center will be built, already has two hotel properties being operated and managed by Megaworld Hotels & Resorts, the country's largest developer of 100% Filipino homegrown hotel brands. These include the 547-room Savoy Hotel Mactan Newtown and the 550-room Belmont Hotel Mactan.

"Our hotel properties within The Mactan Newtown will be ready to handle the accommodation requirements of the Mactan Expo Center. And one thing everyone should look forward to the Mactan Expo Center is the fact that it will just be a few steps away to the beach," says Cleofe Albiso, managing director, Megaworld Hotels & Resorts.

Construction of the Mactan Expo Center will commence this year, and is expected for completion by 2025.

(PRESS RELEASE) – Township developer Megaworld is developing a sustainable boutique hotel and shophouse district within its 462-hectare Paragua Coastown in San Vicente, Palawan.

Strategically located in Kemdeng with its own beachline, the master-planned Mercato Shophouse District and the Porto Hotel District will offer 240 lots ranging from 250 square meters to 599 square meters for shophouses, and 450 square meters to 1,199 square meters for boutique hotels.

Both Mercato Shophouse District and Porto Hotel District are interconnected to each other, providing convenient walkability through expansive sidewalks and bridges. This district is also surrounded by landscaped parks and gardens, and an esplanade along the creek. It will also have access to the Mangrove Reserve Park via an iconic bridge.

“Our eco-tourism township offers businesses and entrepreneurs such as hotel owners, restaurateurs, coffee shop and bar operators, and retail shop owners to own land in San Vicente, particularly inside our master-planned beachside development. This district that we are developing in Kemdeng will have close access to the coastline of Long Beach Area of San Vicente, which has been designated as a Tourism Enterprise Zone (TEZ) of the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA),” says JR Abustan, head of sales and marketing, Megaworld Palawan.

TIEZA’s Tourism Enterprise Zones have special incentives for tourism-related businesses such as tax holidays.

The Mercato Shophouse District and Porto Hotel District will have direct access to San Vicente Town Proper and the San Vicente Airport via the municipal and coastal roads that traverses the township.

The company expects to generate around P5-billion in sales from these projects.

This first area of the expansive Paragua Coastown that is being developed in Kemdeng will also have several mixed-use developments, medical and wellness facilities, church, and other leisure and institutional amenities once completed.

Other areas for future developments within Paragua Coastown include several town barangays, which will mostly have access to Long Beach as well. San Vicente Long Beach boasts of having the longest beach line in the country and the second longest in the entire Southeast Asia.

“We will definitely have unique residential and recreational offerings inside Paragua Coastown as well. What we are building here will hopefully help San Vicente become the most popular eco-tourism spot in Palawan and the entire country. But of course, we give utmost importance to sustainable real estate because this is what everyone will be looking for when they decide to invest in Palawan,” adds Abustan.

Megaworld has allocated P40-billion to develop the entire eco-tourism township in the next 10 to 15 years.  ###

Press Release - Megaworld, the country’s largest developer of integrated urban townships, grew its net income by 46% to P3.3-billion in the third quarter this year from P2.2-billion during the same period last year as the company begins its recovery phase with eased restrictions and gradual re-opening of the country’s economy.

Net income attributable to parent company’s shareholders was up 57% to P3.2-billion during the quarter from last year’s P2.0-billion.

    MEGAWORLD Q3 INCOME
Residential condos in Uptown Bonifacio are among the top-selling properties during the quarter.

For the full nine months of the year, the company’s net income also grew 6% to P8.6-billion from last year’s P8.1-billion, while net income attributable to parent company’s shareholders increased by 10% to P8.2-billion from January to September compared to last year’s P7.4-billion.

Consolidated revenues during the quarter rose by 50% to P14.5-billion from last year’s P9.6-billion. For the first nine months, consolidated revenues, likewise, increased by 10% to P36.9-billion from last year’s P33.4-billion.

“The recovery momentum has started to pick up and we hope that the lowering of the alert levels especially in Metro Manila will continue until the year-end. As more people safely go out and enjoy the normal life, the better for business and our economy as a whole,” says Kevin L. Tan, chief strategy officer, Megaworld.

The company’s real estate sales led the recovery, soaring 102% to P9.6-billion during the third quarter compared to P4.7-billion during the same period last year, reflecting the expansion in construction activities. Reservation sales for the quarter came in at P17.1-billion, reflecting a 35% increase year-on-year. Real estate sales from January to September was also up by 21% to P23.1-billion from last year’s P19.1-billion.

During the quarter, Megaworld launched its first eco-tourism township, the expansive 462-hectare Paragua Coastown in San Vicente, Palawan.

Megaworld Hotels & Resorts also posted 121% year-on-year growth in its hotel revenues to P552-million during the quarter, as the consistent performance of the company’s in-city hotels was bolstered by the opening of Kingsford Hotel, another new homegrown hotel brand, in the company’s Westside City township beside Manila Bay earlier this year. It also reflected an increase in revenues by 9% to P1.3-billion for the full three quarters of the year compared to last year’s P1.2-billion.

Megaworld Premier Offices’ rental income for the quarter was almost flat at P2.9-billion, but it reflected a 7% improvement from the previous quarter as new lease and renewal contracts came in during the quarter. The full nine-month revenues from office leasing were also almost flat at P8.1-billion.

Megaworld Lifestyle Malls grew its rental income for the quarter by 16% year-on-year to P469-million. The improved performance was achieved even as the company continued to provide support to its retail partners by keeping existing rental concessions in place.

To date, Megaworld has 28 masterplanned integrated urban townships, integrated lifestyle communities, and lifestyle estates across the country, namely: Eastwood City in Libis, Quezon City, (18.5 hectares); Newport City in Pasay City (25 hectares); McKinley Hill (50 hectares), McKinley West (34.5 hectares), Uptown Bonifacio (15.4 hectares) and Forbes Town (5 hectares), all in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City; Lucky Chinatown in Binondo, Manila (3 hectares); The Mactan Newtown in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu (30 hectares); Iloilo Business Park in Mandurriao, Iloilo City (72 hectares); Sta. JUST TWO WEEKS AFTER LISTING, MREIT SETS TO DECLARE DIVIDENDS THIS MONTH AS REVENUES JUMP 6% IN 1ST FULL QUARTER OF OPERATIONS

(PRESS RELEASE) - MREIT, Inc., the REIT company of the country’s largest office landlord Megaworld, records an increase in revenues by 6% to P711.2-million during the quarter ending September 2021, on the back of higher rental income amounting to P583.7-million, or 5% higher than the target set in the REIT Plan. The period signifies MREIT’s first full quarter of operations since it acquired ten (10) prime, grade A office assets from Megaworld in June this year.

    Megaworld Logo

Because of this, MREIT prepares to declare dividends within the month of October in line with the REIT plan.  Subject to necessary Board and regulatory approvals, the company is looking into declaring dividends of at least P0.24 per share.

“The is just the initial tranche of dividends that we intend to declare for the current fiscal year 2022. Considering MREIT’s strong performance to date, as well as our improved outlook on office demand and the infusions of additional assets, we are confident of our ability to meet, if not surpass, our dividend projection for the year as indicated in our REIT plan. We thank all our investors for the trust and confidence to MREIT,” says Kevin L. Tan, president and CEO, MREIT, Inc.

MREIT earlier announced its plan to double its portfolio size by 2024, and to reach 1-million square meters in floor size by 2030. By next year alone, around 100,000 square meters of prime office assets will be injected into MREIT.

The company also announced its plan to inject more assets from Uptown Bonifacio in BGC aside from the assets coming from Eastwood City, McKinley Hill, and Iloilo Business Park. According to the report released by Leechiu Properties in June, BGC still commands the highest rental rates among major business districts in the country.

Backed by its access to Megaworld’s extensive office portfolio, MREIT aspires to be one of, if not, the largest office REIT in Southeast Asia because of the company’s long runway for growth.

When I got this news, I got thrilled and excited! Finally, there's no need for Oponganons to travel to Mandaue or Cebu City coz we will be having four state-of-the-art Cinemas here in Lapu-Lapu specifically in Mactan Newtown! Property giant Megaworld is building a two-level mall along the beachside cliff of its 30-hectare The Mactan Newtown development in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

With a total gross floor area of 30,000 square meters, the Mactan Newtown Beach Walk will be highlighted by a 1.4-hectare man-made lagoon at the center.

The lagoon will have floating boardwalks and a bridge that will connect both sides of the mall. With a maximum depth of around 1.5-meters, it can also serve as a venue for future water sports activities such as jet ski, wakeboarding, stand-up paddling, and boating. It will also have its own man-made shoreline at its perimeter.

The Mactan Newtown Beach Walk, which is designed and to be operated under the Megaworld Lifestyle Malls brand, will also have its own chapel that will be surrounded by a garden by the Cliffside, overlooking the sea.

It will also have four state-of-the-art cinemas, a Food Hall, alfresco areas, Traveler’s Lounge, and a view deck, allowing visitors and mallgoers to have a panoramic view of the sea and nearby islands.

“Megaworld Lifestyle Malls is bringing a fresh, new concept of mall development in Cebu that recreates and innovates the beach lifestyle experience. We take inspiration from some iconic coastline commercial developments in South California, where visitors can enjoy coffee, meet friends over lunch or dinner, watch a movie, or simply shop around in this laid-back beach atmosphere,” explains Kevin L. Tan, chief strategy officer, Megaworld.

The mall complex will also have its three-story boutique hotel, offering 48 spacious guestrooms with retail shops at its ground level. This will be operated under the Megaworld Hotels brand.

True to its commitment to sustainability, Megaworld will use solar roof panels for this new mall and will utilize an open layout scheme for passive cooling and natural lighting in most of the development’s common areas.

Around 40% of the entire development will be dedicated to green and open spaces.

“We will even have some untouched areas for bike trails, airsoft shooting, and tree-top activities. This part of the Mactan Newtown is abundantly surrounded with trees, and we want to keep them,” adds Tan.

Megaworld will spend P1.5-billion to build the Mactan Newtown Beach Walk, which is expected for completion in 2021.

Presscon with Megaworld's Lechon Festival in The Mactan Newtown

I came early like before 11 AM. Actually, I was very early for a 12 noon presscon of the first Lechon Festival in Lapu-Lapu City. I couldn't help but appreciate the effort of the waitress who came and helped me with my wifi access. Why mention this? Of course, if you don't know, Cebu City Marriott Hotel got the fastest internet speed in Cebu. And for Millennials, internet is life! You're welcome!

Coffee and Cake For PHP 250 Only

When past 2 in the afternoon came, I headed to the lobby and waited for my Blogger friends. Now, here's a formula to all my Bloggers and Social Media friends. Coffee + Cake + Fast Internet = Chill with Work or Leisure. Yes! And this offerings if just for PHP 250. And oh, did I mention it's unlimited coffee? It's available everyday from 2-5 PM until September 30, 2017! I think, this is an amazing deal than checking in to expensive Coffee shops with some crappy internet connection. Promise, I personally recommend this kind of promo.

    Hawaian Night by the Pool

Oh! Then we had dinner at the Great Room. Sumptuous dinner such as chicken, crispy pata and some fruits to ready our tummy for a night full of music and booze. What's amazing with Cebu Marriott, if you are a member of their Club Marriott, then you'll get free access to events, gatherings and promos offered by the Hotel. And luckily, we were invited to witness what is the Hawaian-kind of chill last Friday. I think that was the real definition of "Chill". Dance, food, drinks - they got a good glass of mojitos!

Pokemon Mania is still dancing in the air as Pokemon Go gives Cebuanos no space for rest in catching them all! When you're living in the historic city of Lapu-Lapu, "Oponganons" have been asking, "Where can we find more Pokémons?!" No need to worry, more than 20 Pokémons are currently lurking around the 30-hectare The Mactan Newtown. Prepare to catch Caterpie, Weedle, Pikachu, Rattata, Voltorb, Electrode, Pidgey, Spearrow, Nidoran, Zubat, Paras, Meowth, Poliwag, Magikarp, Eevee, Exeggcute, and many more!

The Mactan Newtown has one Poké Gym at the Dolphin Fountain, and is near four Poké Stops namely the Mactan Brgy. Hall, Magellan's Battleship Wood Sculpture, Fr. Jules Chevaller Statue and Sto Nino de Cebu Mactan. What’s more, The Mactan Newtown is very pedestrian-friendly so you don’t have to worry about your safety while you’re busy trying to catch as many Pokémons as you can.

While there, you can even grab a quick bite at The Mactan Alfresco, a hawker-style establishment featuring various culinary dishes. You can also check out the newly-built Lechon Pit, where the famous Lechon Cebu is roasted right before your very eyes, then maybe satisfy your Lechon cravings while at it.

The Dolphin Fountain area at the entrance of The Mactan Newtown in Lapu-Lapu City is a major PokeStop in Mactan Island.
The Mactan Newtown is real estate giant Megaworld’s very own township with a beach. Currently, the Mactan Newtown’s masterplan includes 10 luxury condominium towers, five to ten more office towers by 2021, five business and leisure hotels overlooking the Hilutungan Channel and a bustling cyberpark. Soon, it will be home to the Plaza Magellan, a three-level retail and commercial hub with structure inspired by rich Spanish architecture; and The Newtown School of Excellence, headed by the Lasallian Schools Supervision Office
